What can I expect?
The Accademia Gallery is famous. So famous in fact, that the long lines outside sometimes can stretch around the building! When you know what's waiting inside, one does not wonder why.
Accademia opened in the 1780's as a teaching facility for students at the Academy of Fine Arts. Now, if you mention the Accademia Gallery, most art-lovers, who knows this place, mentions Michelangelo's 'David'; his famous and very detailed statue, which is actually 5 meters tall. The statue is said to be a symbol of the struggles of the Florentine Republic against its bigger rivals back in the day, and 'David' encapsulates the spirit of the city itself.
Besides 'David' another famous statue of Michelangelo is to find inside: The statue 'Slaves', which is a set of captive figures enslaved in marble. The most impressive part is that Michelangelo didn't even get to finish it, and it still looks breathtaking. You also see paintings from the 15th century by artists Botticelli, Ghirlandaio and Uccello, among others, but the statues inside Accademia Gallery will especially leave an impression with you on the way out!
